چکیده

Using a simple analytical model, this paper addresses the following question: Should the Internet retain its best-e ort-only architecture, or should it adopt one that is reservation-capable? We characterize the di erences between reservation-capable and best-e ort-only networks in terms of application performance and total welfare. Our analysis does not yield a de nitive answer to the question we pose, since it would necessarily depend on unknowable factors such as the future cost of network bandwidth and the nature of the future tra c load. However, our model does reveal some interesting phenomena. First, in some circumstances, the amount of incremental bandwidth needed to make a best-e ortonly network perform as well as a reservation capable one diverges as capacity increases. Second, in some circumstances reservation-capable networks retain signi cant advantages over best-e ort-only networks, no matter how cheap bandwidth becomes. Lastly, we nd bounds on the maximum performance advantage a reservation-capable network can achieve over beste ort architectures.

Best-Effort Versus Reservations Revisited

In this paper, we walk in the footsteps of the stimulating paper by Lee Breslau and Scott Shenker entitled “Best-effort vs. Reservations: A Simple Comparative Analysis”[1]. In fact, we finally follow their invitation to use their models as a starting point and extend them to reason about the very basic but still very much debated architectural issue whether quality of service (QoS) mechanisms l...

Best-eeort versus Reservations: a Simple Comparative Analysis

The current Internet only ooers best-eeort service. In recent years much research eeort, and IETF standardization activity, has been devoted to extending the Internet architecture to support reservations. However, the wisdom of such an extension continues to remain in doubt. Using a simple analytical model, this paper addresses the following question: Should the Internet retain its best-eeort-o...

ABE: Providing a Low-Delay Service within best-effort

We propose Alternative Best-E ort (ABE), a novel service for IP networks, which relies on the idea of providing low-delay at the expense of maybe less throughput. The objective is to retain the simplicity of the original Internet single class, best e ort service, while providing low delay to interactive, adaptive applications. With ABE, every best e ort packet is marked as either green or blue....

A Proposal for an Asymmetric Best-E ort Service

We propose Asymmetric Best-E ort, a novel service to provide a \throughput versus delay jitter" differentiated service for IP packets. With this service, every best e ort packet is marked as either Green or Blue. Green packets, typically sent by real-time applications such as interactive audio, receive more losses during bouts of congestion than Blue ones. In return, they receive less delay jit...
